What is a Specialist?

A veterinary specialist is a highly qualified veterinarian who has completed intensive additional training and education in a specific area of veterinary medicine.

To become a Veterinary Specialist, a veterinarian must first complete a degree in veterinary medicine. Then, they must complete a rigorous training program (generally over a 5-6 year period), including an internship, and a residency, before passing an intensive examination process consisting or written, oral and practical exams in their chosen specialty. To be eligible to sit these examinations, one needs to have accumulated hundreds of hours of surgical training within a specialist hospital, spoken at veterinary conferences and published articles in peer reviewed veterinary journals.
